Mr. Nicholas J. Benner

It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Nicholas J. Benner, 51, of Cortland, New York, on July 8, 2026. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on January 7, 1975, Nick was the beloved son of Calvin and Sharon Benner of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Elizabethtown, PA and graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School in 1994. From a young age, Nick learned the value of hard work. He began delivering newspapers at the age of 13, where he excelled and eventually earned the coveted Paper Carrier of the Year award. During high school, he worked as a cook at the Country Table Restaurant before spending several years in the masonry trade with KLB Masonry. Soon after high school, Nick chose to pursue his true passion—agriculture. In 2002, he and Missy purchased a dairy farm in Cortland, New York, where he farmed for the next 21 years. He took great pride in being a dairy farmer and in being part of the agricultural community, where he built lifelong friendships. One of his proudest accomplishments was receiving the Dairy of Distinction Award. Three years ago, Nick retired from farming and embraced a new chapter in life. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, and restoring his 1971 Ford pickup truck. Nick was an avid storyteller and truly one of a kind with a heart for God. His warmth, humor, and genuine kindness drew people to him wherever he went. With an infectious laugh, a quick wit, and a gift for making everyone feel welcome, he was often the life of the party. One of Nick's greatest joys was helping others. Whether fixing a problem, offering encouragement, or sharing a few well-earned words of wisdom; he was always there when someone needed him. His playful spirit, fierce loyalty, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be remembered always and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Nick is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Melissa Benner; his son, Cody Benner (Grace Benner); and his cherished granddaughter, Quinn Benner. He is also survived by his parents, Calvin and Sharon Benner; his sister, Victoria Myers (John Myers); his brothers, Nathan Benner (Shana Benner) and David Benner (Jennifer Benner); along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He is also lovingly remembered by his extended family, including Melissa's half-siblings, Travis Buckwalter (Sara Buckwalter), Nicole Infanger (Trey Infanger), and Eli Buckwalter (Rylee Reese), who held a special place in his life. In keeping with Nick's wishes, funeral services will be private. The family looks forward to celebrating his life with friends and loved ones at a Celebration of Life, which will be held at a later date.
