Mr. Louis G. Odinek

Louis G. Odinek, 93, of Cortland and formerly of Marathon passed away Wednesday March 29, 2017 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Born, February 15, 1924 in Marathon, Louis was a resident of the area his entire life, he faithfully served his country in the military during the Korean Conflict. Louis was a 1942 graduate of Marathon Central School and had retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1979 where he was employed as a Foreman., after retiring he worked part time at Reliable Machine and the Village of Marathon. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Dawn Smith Odinek, the couple were married in St. Stephens Roman Catholic Church in Marathon and in July the couple would have celebrated 65 years of marriage. Louis was a longtime communicant of St. Stephen's Church serving first as an Altar Server and later on in life as an Usher. Additionally, he was a member of the Marathon Fire Department and the Lions Club. Louis enjoyed many sports and was a catcher with the Marathon Town Baseball Team, he also enjoyed bowling, golf and hunting. Louis greatly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren who held a very special place in his heart. In addition to his wife, Louis is survived by a daughter; Marie Dann of Cortland, two grandchildren; Rebecca (Matt) Lowie of Cortland and Ian Dann of Liverpool, two great grandchildren; Ella and Brynn Lowie both of Cortland, a brother; Thomas Odinek of Liverpool, brother in law; Hugh (Donna Gayle) Smith, sisters in law; Carol Smith, Mary Laing and Lois Herold and nephews; Bill (Betty) Perfitt and Dick (Judy) Odinek. Louis is also survived by his very special and faithful K-9 companion; Sweet Pea. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by a brother; Francis, sister; Catherine Perfitt and brothers in law; Doug Smith, Richard "Red" Herold and Robert "Bob" Laing, sisters in law; Jane Odinek and Mary "Kate" Smith A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. in St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Marathon, N.Y., concelebrated by Rev. Douglas Cunningham and Rev. Lester Smith. Prayers of committal in Marathon Cemetery will be delayed until spring. There are no calling hours. A luncheon and a time for sharing will follow the funeral mass downstairs in the church, all are invited.
