Mr. James W. VanNortwick, Sr.

Mr. James W. VanNortwick, Sr. 83, of Cortland, N.Y. passed away, Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Born, November 13, 1929 in Geneva, Jim was a son of, William J. and Mary Kinney VanNortwick and a Cortland resident for many years. Jim faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force and was a proud graduate of Siena College. Jim taught New York State History and Math in the Waterloo Central School District where he was a resident for 10 years, prior to relocating to Cortland with his family to become the Director of Pupil Personal at Cortland Jr. Sr. High School from 1966-1991. A communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Jim served his church in various capacities, as an usher, reader, greeter and gift bearer. He was a pen pal at St. Mary's School, and a Bingo volunteer. Jim was a member of R.S.V.P and drove cancer patients for the American Cancer Society. Additionally, Jim was named Senior Citizen of The Year in Cortland County. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling and was a referee and umpire for the high school sports programs. But, Jim's happiest times were those he spent with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia, 2 sons; James W. Jr. (Kimberly) of Chicago, Illinois, Gerald Albini (Lisa) of California, 4 daughters; Monica (Patrick) West of Cortland, Mary Grace VanNortwick (Christopher Passarelli) of Liverpool, Patrice VanNortwick (Geri Button) of Utica, and Pamela Woodward of Denver, Colorado., a brother; Francis VanNortwick of Syracuse, and 7 grandchildren, Emily and James Williams, Clay and Cole VanNortwick, John Tyler Normann, Charlotte VanNortwick and Sophia Woodward. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by 2 sisters; Jeanne Carman and Mary Helen Becker. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Lucian Urbaniak serving as celebrant. Prayers of committal will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home 69 N.
